The 2020 Lonsdale MTK Box Cup has received an overwhelming response – with over 600 boxers set to compete in the highly-acclaimed event.
The elite-level amateur competition will take place at the Penrith Leisure Centre in Cumbria from April 2 to April 5, building on the success that the tournament has already had in recent years.
Entries for next year’s event opened on October 31, and organiser Steve Sharkey has reflected on the incredible response there has already been.
MTK Box Cup organiser Steve Sharkey said: “We’re overwhelmed with the response and it’s been fantastic support from the boxing community.
“We’ve had people entering from all over the world and we could have filled this tournament three times over. It’s becoming one of the most popular European tournaments around.
“We’re attracted clubs from Sweden, Poland, Germany, Spain, Ireland and even more countries, plus all over the UK, so everyone now knows how successful this event is.
“We have returning champions coming and defending their titles and championship belts up for grabs. There are over 100 boxing clubs who have entered and there will be over 600 boxers competing in the tournament.
“The entries have stopped for now while we see how many spaces the returning champions will take up, and then we’ll calculate any remaining spaces and they’ll be released in the New Year.
“It’s amazing to see, especially as we only opened entries on October 31 and within nine days we were already jam packed.”
